FRIDAY

Carteret (4-0) at Woodbridge (2-3), 7 p.m.: Carteret’s defense, stellar over the first three games, during which it allowed a total of 19 points, yielded more than that in last weekend’s 55-32 victory over Colonia. The Ramblers, a perennial power who finished with an uncharacteristic 1-10 record a year ago, are one of the state’s best turnaround stories. Quarterback Angelo Golino (31 of 53 for 493 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions for a 109.2 rating), running backs Quartius Byrd (43 carries, 428 yards, six touchdowns) and Antoran Chandler (47 carries, 301 yards, five touchdowns) have benefited from a vastly improved offensive line. Keanu Chapman (10 catches, 149 yards) and Dwayne Sharpe (eight catches, 128 yards) each have three receiving touchdowns. A balanced offense (eight players have scored at least one touchdown) is averaging a league-leading 418.8 yards from scrimmage per game. Carteret has won the turnover battle with a plus-4 margin. Sharpe (31), Emmanuel Omokha (30), Farhan Khan (27) and Jarrod Tasnady (27) are the Ramblers’ leading tacklers. Khan (three sacks) and David Pierre (two sacks) are top pass rushers. James Hart, who has converted 19 of 22 extra point attempts, gives the Ramblers an edge on special teams as a kicker and punter. Woodbridge snapped a three-game losing streak with a 52-20 victory over J.F. Kennedy in which Keshaun “Scooby” Henry set single-game school records for touchdowns (six), points (40) and scoring receptions (four). The Barrons scored more points last weekend than they registered in four previous games combined. Woodbridge, which has played a more challenging schedule than Carteret, lost two games – Manasquan 7-6 and South Plainfield 15-12 – by a total of four points. Woodbridge is balanced with quarterback Donovan Tabon (40 of 67 for 621 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions for a 112.8 quarterback rating) and running back Da’Avian Ellington, a Carteret transfer who has rushed 69 times for 324 yards and two scores. Quaasim Glover, who led the league in receptions last season, remains dangerous with 20 catches for 264 yards. Nick Nyers, son of former Woodbridge head coach Bill Nyers, leads the conference with 68 tackles. Teammates Antoine Hall (38 tackles) and Alex LaGrippo (33 tackles) also anchor the defense. The Barrons are plus-5 in the turnover department.
Pick: Woodbridge 22-21.
