Freshman Squad Deserves Praise!

Overall, it’s been a rough season for the Woodbridge HS Football Program.  The Varsity has ended their regular season with a 2 - 6 record, and did not qualify for the NJSIAA Playoffs.  The JV Squad has a 1 - 6 record, and the Sophomores own a 2 - 5 record. 

 

Now let me be perfectly clear!  This report is not a knock on any of these groups of kids.  With a lucky break here or there, and a few less mistakes, all of these teams would be sporting positive records.  This report however, was written to give praise where it has been earned, and the Freshman Squad has earned every word here!

 

The Freshman Squad have produced 135 points (19.3 PPG) and allowed only 87 points (12.4) in their seven games to date, and they have amassed a 5 – 0 – 2 season record! 

 

In the two tied games, their own mistakes late in the 4th quarter, lead to their failure to register the wins.  They did however stop and take deep breaths, stood strong, and prevented their opponents from getting it!  That says a lot about the character of this squad.

 

That character and impressive play was not lost on Varsity Head Coach, Brian Russo.  With the Sophomores struggling and winless, he ordered the starting offense and defense of the Freshman to join them.  The result was a blend of 9th and 10th graders who played good sound football, and registered a 2 – 2 record.

 

The Freshman have been lucky or good enough to take advantage of the situations presented to them in their seven games, enabling them to chalk up the wins.  A game not originally scheduled has been placed onto the calendar.  The Perth Amboy Panthers will come calling on Wednesday, November 9th 11am, followed by the final game of the season, against cross-town rivals, the Colonia Patriots. 

 

As a result of the hard work and dedication to succeed by this group of kids, I offer my personal praise to the 2005 Woodbridge Football Freshman Squad.  You have represented yourselves, your families and friends well.  Congratulations on a wonderful football season.  Now, its time to stop and take that deep breath again, and show PA what Woodbridge Football is about, then take on Colonia, and register that UNDEFEATED season we have talked about since week one!
